Its not just Cricket!

As I see India's pathetic and shameful performance in this world cup ( Sorry You Hard core fanatics Bermuda didn't beat Bangladesh) , it rings a familiar bell in my mind.

It was back in my 11th class,when I was taking coaching for my entrance exams( please this is a serious post,I would refrain myself from sarcasm),and once our physics teacher said this to whole class ,"You see, this is not just a problem of you not studying and performing well,It is much more deep rooted than that. As I see your faces, I see no one of wants to really study hard and prove something. You all come from good families,you get all the facilities one child can get. And this is the problem. It has spoiled your attitude towards life. You have got every
possible thing in you life,you parents had made sure that you get what you want.And Hence,you have this " No worries,Chalta hain" attitude in you. Beacause you feel safe, you feel nothing can go real bad! You know dep inside that soon you will be forgiven, you parents love you so much. They will do something for you again. Chalta hain yaar! Tension nahi!"

These words did make a real hard impact on me ,and they seem relevant to almost everywhere. Look around us ,We indians do have this "chalta hain" attitude engraved in us. Not all,pardon me but yes majority of us.

And this reflects clearly from our Cricket team. They all have made nice money. They know it is not that big deal. It will soon go away. A couple of good personal performances and they will be heroes again!

You see its not just cricket. Students,Politicians, professors,Policy Makers,Men ,Women ,Children....... its everywhere!

"Kya yaar,fir kya hua...Chalta hain! "

I guess it has become a reality..Isnt it?

hmmmm...was wondering what you were doing,up so early...this post explains it all.
Hi...i am doing fine...and you did not forget anything...you have just been on my blog...thank you for dropping by.
Abt this post: you said it all...that attitude is so ingrained in all the youth, that when it comes to the crux...facing a deadline or a challenge....and that too individually(not collectively, because he knows the blame can then b shared), where they will be held responsible for their acts...the outcome...thats where they fumble. They are left gasping for support and that is what lets them down. Do they ever wonder what their contribution would mean...their personal effort...no!...they always seek an extra foot. never are they able to stand on their on feet,however able-bodied they maybe.And in a way, parents too are responsible for this...in their eyes the child never grows up, and always tend to the child's every need, even if it means going out of their means.Only when this child is on his own feet one day, does he realize the value of independency.
Strange na...does any Indian realize the value of his country's independence today?

@moonlight

Well you have said it all!

So Ironical and yet so true!

It's strange how the privileged have either the toughest job on hand - proving they are worthy of the privileged position life has accorded them - or the easiest - to adopt the 'chalta hai' attitude! I guess our cricket team opted for the latter.

we are surely to be blamed. Remember, after the debacle at 2003 final, our cricketers were feted. If it would have happened to the aussies they are surely not welcome into the country. All the current backlash against the indian team will subside once we start winning matches. And what better way to start winning than to play against bangladesh. We, indians, certainly lack a spine.

Very well pointed out Aman. Exactly... this "Chalta hai" attitude does compromise on our performances, on our achievements and even sense of achievements. But having said that, there is a flipside to it. I feel this "chalta hai" attitude is what is a saving grace at most times. You know after a pitch proposal when you dont win the client, after writing an exam you dont fare well, be it hard luck or your own sheer carelessness, the "chalta hai attitude" is what helps you take light and still live in peace with yourself. The chalta hai attitude is what makes you board a train immediately after a train accident, travel to Chennai in Cyclone, still go to Vaishno Devi despite the terror attacks, vote at polls, despite all the poll booth vandalization. So you know this take it easy, chalta hai attitude can be positive too.

But ofcourse what you have stated is quite the truth, just that there is another side to the coin. :-)

These people are professionals in playing cricket. I wonder how road side cricketers from India would have performed in World Cup. I guess better....

I totally agree with that chalta hai attitude that you talk about.. its too much ingrained in us! I just finished reading a book called "games indians play" by V raghunathan, and he talks all about why we have such an attitude! About our environment, roads, traffic, municipal system, cricket, office, etc etc.. and yes, the indian public has a very short memory.. so one or two good innings and we'll forget and forgive.. and indian cricket team seems to be more about personal achievements and records than about the country..

Anonymous said...

well i think the performance clearly shows that when you wander your mind to any thing other than the target .... you get thrown away, india took thier mightyness for granted and paid the price .... i red this article somwhere which said Indian government was happy that India was out of the world cup, reasoon being we are already facing huge power cuts all over india, with world cup on for 7 hrs a day, we would have seen bigger load sheds and now that india is out they can relax n never wonder about the problems, so the chalta hai attitude again here !

Amandeep Singh said...

@ Kaavya
Ya they end fuckin us all and our feelings( btw who the cricketer...;)?)

@Sifar
Ya bet man..they will do better! my Mahuala team would for sure!

@Ruchika

yes, aman, i agree with you, we're all used to this word "chalta hai", hence such silly attitude deepens. your teacher was correct in saying,"the problem is deep rooted", the attitude goes well with our cricket team and we too, just look around you, you will find it everywhere, whether its a car parked on the main road or few friends throwing chips pack on a clean road after snacks. this is really going to cost us. I'll also post something about it soon.

Chalta hai... I many not understand the direct quote, but I think I understand your feeling. If you think Indians have it bad, I can assure you Americans have it even worse. I do like what minakshi said about the flip side of it. It makes me feel a bit better...
